Getting onto self-improvement is hard

If you read this article, it's because you probably decided to change your life. maybe you're unhappy with your life as a whole, or your job, or your body, or your self-esteem, or your relationship, I mean you might be very unhappy about a lot of things, maybe even depressed or heartbroken.

And in this case, no problem. I'm here to help you. So first off, my name is Gianni, I'm the founder (and co-founder in the same time) of Always Improving, and I'm the writer of these articles. I've been on self-improvement for almost two years now and it has been the greatest journey in my life. For the first time in my life I saw myself with abs and big arms, I became very disciplined and I found a girlfriend. I am more social than ever and have a lot of good friends.

And I think, your life could look very similar too. And I think, you can start changing it RIGHT NOW.

But before, don't think that self-improvement is easy. It's not an easy hack, something that you can just activate in your mind and it'll be done immediately. Self-improvement is very hard because it rests on the principle of "delayed gratification", which is doing good things for you that are going to give you benefits in days, weeks, months or even years.

For example, if you go to the gym, you're not going to become instantly muscular. You need to go to the gym many times per week, and that for months and even years, to reach your dreamed physique. This is why self-improvement is so hard, it doesn't give you immediate rewards in most cases.

But hey, no worries, I'm going to teach you the habits you need to have and how to perform them so you can become a better human being. But before, if you want to get onto self-improvement, you need to understand that you're going to have to give up bad habits, build good ones, become way more disciplined that you currently are and you'll have to change your mindset and your identity.

If you change yourself so much, in a good manner, then your life will become incredibly better and you'll be super happy for once. Really, working on yourself feels like drinking cold water in a hot desert or having a good night of sleep in a particularly difficult week, it's a sort of purge that makes you feel invincible, and it'll make you fulfilled. I truly believe self-improvement can help you be fulfilled.

So, our goal should therefore be to become 1% better everyday, because if we become 1% better everyday, this means we become 36,5 times better every year, or 365% better every year. That's HUGE progress. So, we'll need to keep learning and keep improving throughought this journey, and we should not stagnate intentionally (because sometimes you'll stagnate but you need to keep pushing).

Therefore, this leads us to the question: what should I do to get better? Well, here is a list of habits I want you to start implementing in your life. List them all on a paper, and put it on your wall or on your desk everyday so you see it.

Habit 1: Exercise

Exercising is probably the best activity you could do to improve your life immediately. Exercise has been linked to many incredible physical benefits, such as reduced risk of most diseases, reduced risk of heatstroke, better mental health, more confidence, improved social skills, improved immune system, improved physical health, improved hormonal health (which leads to bettered mental health and more confidence and more muscles which leads to more confidence so bettered mental health, you see how great self-improvement is and how much of a positive cycle it is?), improved physical appearance (more muscle mass, less fat, more attractive), improved focus and clarity of mind, and improved discipline and willpower (which leads to you exercising more or better which leads to you become more disciplined which leads to you becoming better in every area of your life, etc, once more a positive feedback loop).

To check out a full guide on exercising, click here. It's a long-form article that I've put a lot of energy into. It should resume everything you need to know about exercise. If it's too much for you, which it probably is and it's totally understandable, try to read one part of the article everyday until you finish it, and apply each part you read to your daily life or exercising routine.

Now, to get onto exercising, try to do it step by step. Start very small, start today by doing 10 push-ups. And tomorrow try 15 push-ups and a small 2 minute jog. And after that 20 push-ups and a small 3 minute jog. With time you'll be able to do 100's of push-ups and long jogs, and you'll even have an exercising routine. Just understand that you'll feel fucking awesome for working out like a disciplined person, and not only will you feel awesome and the "main character" of your own life, but you'll also feel more confident and just content and happy.

Habit 2: Eating good foods

If you have the habit of eating Cheetos, you don't know what eating food is. Because Cheetos isn't food. Cheetos is Cheetos. Just like shit is shit. So really, try to eat healthy. Just like before, the benefits of eating healthy are absolutely incredible. Improved mental health, improved physical health, improved physical appearance, improved digestion, improved gut health, decreased risk of many diseases, more muscle mass, less fat, more happiness, more confidence, more social skills, improved discipline and willpower and ability to focus and mental clarity, etc.

So eat a healthy diet composed of healthy foods. Do "cheat meals" from time to time where you eat unhealthy foods or foods that you don't usually allow yourself to eat in your casual diet. Your casual diet shouldn't be feeling like torture everyday. At first it'll be hard but with time, your palate will adapt to natural foods, and you'll only eat healthy and natural foods.

Our ideal is to go toward a 100% natural diet, with only natural ingredients (eggs, rice, beans, meat, fish, tomatoes, cucumbers, oats, honey, fruits, legumes, etc). This diet is absolutely incredible, as not only does it boost your health, but you feel awesome, and it tastes super good. And, by using a few techniques, you can make food that taste super good, and in the same time that is super healthy (such as home-made oatmeal cookies for example).

Click here to see a long-form article on the subject of nutrition. It's long but it's super worth it as it's rich in information. Please read it, do a favor for yourself, CHANGE. DO IT. IT'S NOW OR NEVER.

Habit 3: Learning

Most people stop learning after school. But you want to keep learning during school, after school, and forever more. Really, learning is absolutely essential to becoming a better individual and to bettering your life in every aspect.

Just as you would train yourself physically by lifting dumbbells for example, you want to train yourself mentally by learning new things. These new elements you're learning could help sharpen your skills and better yourself, and "level-up" your life like in a video game.

So keep on learning. Reading books is one of the best ways to learn. Reading articles too. Watching YouTube podcasts about self-improvement is great too, and watching self-improvement videos can prove to be very helpful too. So use any device you want, but make sure you're learning a little bit everyday.

Start small, as always, but DO THE CHANGE. You can do it. The people you think are awesome, they started at ground 0 too! From the moment we were all babies, we all started from ground 0. Now get your excuses out of the window, stop being a cry baby, and take responsibility for your life!

Try to read these books to begin with: Atomic Habits by James Clear, How To Win friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie, and The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck by Mark Manson.

Habit 4: Meditation

No, meditation doesn't mean you're praying to a foreign Indian god in a weird temple that is half broken down and a statue of a goat and smoke around you whilst humming. Meditation is about closing your eyes and focusing on one single thing in your mind for a specific amount of time.

There are many types of meditations: mindful meditation which is about feeling everything around you, be it the sensations of your body, the emotions, the birds singing, the cars passing, and everything in between and together.

There is also nose breathing meditation, where you breathe and you meditate and focus on the air that enter your lungs and the pathway they go through and how they get out.

There is also mantra meditation, where you meditate on a mantra, a thought or a sentence. You simply focus and repeat this mantra in your mind all throughought the meditation session.

If you're not a bitch, do 1 minute of meditation today. Else you're an absolute bitch. Do it NOW. Close your eyes and repeat to yourself "I'm going to change" again and again in your mind. NOW. For one single minute.

And, read this article that is once more a long-form article on the subject. Click here.

Habit 5: Good sleep

Getting good sleep has the same benefits of exercising and eating healthy, it's simply one of the most incredible habits you can have in your life. How many times I have been shocked how irrational and irritated and easily angry and completely immature I can be when I have only 6 hours of sleep compared to 9 full hours.

Sleep can really fuck up with your mind, so get a consistent sleep schedule everyday, and go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday. You respect others (and your boss) by not arriving late, so respect yourself more than you respect others, and set a consistent sleep schedule (consistent bedtime and wake-up time, with a 30 minute interval. So if I tell myself I should go to sleep everyday at 23:00, I can go to sleep at 22:30 or at 23:30).

Also, it's alright to have breaks from time to time and sleep less because you had an issue or a problem to fix or more work from your boss or because you spent a fun day with your partner or your friends and you just came back from the restaurant or whatever. That's fine. Just don't make it an habit. Make it an exception. And try to respect your bedtime, it's very important.

Do it little by little. If you had the habit of sleeping only 6 hours everyday and going to sleep at 12pm everyday, try to go to sleep now at 11:30pm and sleep 6:30 hours, and then sleep 7 hours by going to sleep earlier, etc etc. Just start small and try to increase from there. There's no need to do big jumps, because often times you'll fail if you do big jumps. Change slowly. Include good habits everyday. Make yourself a better person.

Conclusion

Self-improvement is a life-long journey, so start small, and build your life from there. Self-improvement is the opportunity of your life to make yourself a fucking epic legend. When you admire people for what they do, how they act and what they wear, realize that you can be this legend too.

Really, YOU CAN BE FUCKING AWESOME. You just missed the train many times. Catch it now until your "loser habits" are too ingrained in you to make you realize you need to change.

Save yourself now, and keep improving.
