Introduction

A lot of people spend the majority of their days doing bad habits. Often times, this lack of discipline is caused by a lack of organization. You see, when we don’t have anything to do, when we don’t have any organization, we tend to.. do nothing and be unproductive. Going in circles, not knowing what to do, watching TV and then scrolling on the internet, we often get lost into bad habits when we don’t know what to do, because our brain becomes lazy and unproductive.

So, a good way to stop bad habits and to actually get the productivity and the work going, is to organize our lives. Our brain loves organization and routine. Everything in your life can be automatized into a routine like behavior, so as to boost your productivity in these parts of your days. For example, if you tend to go to sleep everyday at the same time and wake up at the same time every single day, your brain is going to eventually wake up at these specific times without needing you to put an alarm, for example. It’s the nature of the brain: it makes connections and follows them, if it can.

So, you need to build good patterns and organize your life, and one great tool to do so, is to use the one I’m going to show to you in this article.

And it is…

Google Agenda

Yes, google agenda. If you didn’t know this tool, or haven’t used it in this manner, google agenda can really become a life organizer. Google Agenda was created by Mike Samuel when he worked at google, and it came out in 2006. This tool is therefore quite old, even tho it has been optimized to nowadays technology.

One thing that is great with Google Agenda is that it can help you massively in productivity and organization. It’s easy to use and very accessible (since nowadays we all have a fun or a computer near us). It’s literally a productivity tool made to organize your whole day. Sure, you can use it to only put meetings at work and all that kind of stuff, or you can use it too in your personal life so as to organize your days into productive days.

I have a metaphor that you’ll like. Imagine that your brain has a certain amount of « brain points », like an amount of money or an amount of energy that your brain has for the day to work and function properly. The more the days goes by, the more you use brain points to take decisions and do things. The problem is, a lot of people waste brain points on stupid things! They waste brain points thinking for dozens of minutes what they’re going to eat, or what the new video game is, or what is the new show on TV, whatever.

Instead, if you stat using your brain points productively, you can live a more productive life. This means taking meaningful decisions that will push you forward and considering and speaking about things that will help you improve as a person. I’m not saying you should optimize your whole life and forget about listening to the news from time to time or to stop thinking about what you’re eating and eat the same thing everyday, I’m just saying you should start trying to save brain points by installing organization and routine.

And, this is where Google Agenda comes into play. The thing with google agenda is that it can truly help you schedule your whole day in a productive manner, it saves you brain points. Think about it, instead of having to think « okay, where do I begin with work, when do I do this and that, when do I go to the gym today, what do I eat? » you can just open google agenda, organize your whole day, and follow this plan!

For example, you know that at 4pm you’re going to the gym, and that at 7pm you start eating. You know that at 10am you’re working and that at 11am you’re checking emails. This enables you to organize your day productively and know what you’re doing, ultimately reducing the amount of « thinking » you invest into organizing your day, and therefore saving you brain points! This is the magical power of Google Agenda!

Also, planning your personal and professional life on Google Agenda can help you be time conscious. Time consciousness is to me, the consciousness of time. Helpful? No? No, for real, time consciousness is when you take consciousness of the amount of time you’re wasting and the amount of time you’re using, and the amount of time you truly have to reach your goals.

For example, if you see that everyday you’re wasting 3 hours infront of the TV, and then you’re saying « I don’t have the time to go to the gym », with Google Agenda, you can clearly stop bullshitting yourself and see that the problem is not time, it’s you and your method of prioritization as well as your habits.

Also, Google Agenda can help you do your work productively and therefore save time for other productive things in life or simply moments that are good for you, such as seeing your friends, spending time with your partner, meeting with your family, doing sports even more or going for walks or cooking, etc.

By saving time by being productive, you can re-invest the « gained time » in even more work, or, on the contrary, on « resting », such as sleeping more, taking naps, meditating, reading, walking in nature, walking in the city, seeing friends, going to the cinema with your partner, etc. You save time for the things that truly matters!

However, Google Agenda also has its limits, and we’ll see why right now.

The limits of Google Agenda

Even tho Google Agenda is a great productivity tool that you should definitely use in your everyday life if you can, there is still one big problem with Google Agenda. By being too restricted to a routine, it can become quite unhealthy and unproductive. For example, how many times have I used Google Agenda in the past (because at the date of this writing I’m not using it), and I’ve not followed the schedule correctly and felt guilty for it. How many times did something come up and I spent an unproductive amount of time modifying my schedule to fit it into my day.

By being too restricted, some people will miss on some cool life events, such as suddenly deciding to go to a shopping center or to a cinema or to a bar with friends or your partner or your family, or simply doing activities that comes up from everyday lives. For example, at the date of this writing, I’m supposed to work the whole day and then relax.

But, if suddenly something comes up and someone asks me if I want to go to the shopping center to buy clothes with them, or to go and do a great activity with friends, I might sometimes be inclined to say no, but I might sometimes be inclined to say yes! Sometimes, breaking your schedule for random life events is not necessarily a bad thing. Sure, if it happens everyday, it might not be bad, but it might get you away from your goals. But, if you break your schedule from to time, it’s alright. The problem is, when you start using Google Agenda, you might start developing a sort of obsession of « following your calendar » and this can cause you to be self-restrictive instead of productive.

So, even tho Google Agenda is a great productivity tool, still be careful about it and do not spend too much time trying to « optimize » your life. Sure, having an agenda with the activities of your day written on it is fine, but if you miss an activity or don’t do something correctly or don’t go according to the schedule and you feel very guilty about it, it’s bad.

Sure, if you were supposed to work and you instead watched TV, you have a reason to feel guilty because you didn’t follow up on your own words for yourself! But, if your friend suddenly asked if he could come home and you were supposed to work more in the afternoon, and you derive from the schedule by spending an hour, or half an hour with him, it’s alright.

The thing is, a lot of interesting events happens in life because of random outgoings or events. For example, you might meet people that could help you in your projects in a crucial way going to the cinema, or to the library, or to the shopping center. You might go to the bar or to the cafe to drink a coffee, and meet an entrepreneur that gives you tons of advice on your own business which can help you improve yourself and the business along the way.

So, be ORGANIZED, be PRODUCTIVE, but be EVEN MORE PRODUCTIVE by realizing that random life events and resting and breaks also plays an important role. Work hard, rest hard. Be organized, but also be disorganized when needed.

Another productivity tool

Another productivity tool outside of Google Agenda is simply having a good life hygiene! Having a great diet is super important for productivity, having a good sleep hygiene is extremely important for productivity to avoid brain fogs and fatigue and health issues, exercising often plays the same role too, and mental health is also extremely important. I might seem to repeat myself here, but really, put an emphasis on the importance of these factors.

A great life hygiene and a good image of self developed through self-improvement and overcoming challenges is what builds character and productivity. Be productive. Avoid junk food, avoid sleeping late for stupid reasons, avoid missing workouts, take care of your mental health, and you’ll be good to go.

Conclusion

Google Agenda is a great tool, and you should definitely try to use it for at least a week to see if it boosts your productivity. Don’t get too caught up in it tho, because it can then prove to be quite toxic.

Also, a real-life agenda can also be of help, but often times it’s easier to have it on your digital objects (phone, computer, iPad) because it enables you to get notifications when needed and also it’s more accessible (and let’s be realistic, most of us have their phones a meter away from them or even in their pocket 80% of the day).
