What is a pre workout?

A pre-workout is a supplement, often in powdered form, that is taken before a workout, in order to boost energy levels. The ingredients inside of these pre-workout supplements are made so as to give you a ton of energy, and from the people I've met at the gym over the years, I can assure you, it's not a good idea to take this supplement.

A pre-workout supplement usually sells for 35-50 dollars/euros, and lasts for about one to two months. As you can see, it's quite expensive, and the funny thing is, you pay all this money, just to destroy your health, for the sake of "performance".

Why avoiding it?

Avoiding pre workout is about avoiding cancer, insomnia, energy problems, hormonal changes, and depression. Yes, for real. It might not be the only factor, but a major factor. When you look at what pre-workout does to your body long-term... it's the truth. The sad truth. The thing with pre workout is that the ingredients inside of it are... quite suspiciously unhealthy.

Let's for example, look at the dosage of caffeine inside of a pre-workout. The amount of caffeine inside of a pre-workout supplement (one scoop of it, so one dosage), is 150mg to 400mg of caffeine, so around 2-4 cups of coffee. That's a lot. And, this is only one of the ingredients. Of course, there is also the high amount of sugar. Because yes, in order to boost your energy levels quickly, they add a ton of refined sugar to the already super high amounts of caffeine, causing your heart to go BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM.

And when your heart goes BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM, and you get full of energy, it also means you get full of anxiety, and health issues.

First off, without even speaking about the sugar-caffeine combo, sugar alone is super destructive. Studies have shown over the past few years that refined sugar, was extremely dangerous for health when consumed everyday. It could lead, and is one of the main leaders, of many diseases. The problem with sugar is that it plays with your blood sugar levels, and so it reduces important hormones in your body that are great for general health, disease protection, mood, and more. This is why everyone who is obese is also depressed for the most part, first off because they're not proud of themselves, but also because their hormones are completely out of place.

The goal is to stabilize estrogen levels to a "normal dose" and boost testosterone to the maximum, so for men it might be around 800-1000ng/dl of testosterone (as a goal), and for women around 70-100ng/dl. Testosterone is vital for many reasons, but I don't really want to explain it right now as it's not the goal of this article. Simply said, it's the vital hormone regulating your mood, the vital hormone building muscle and strength, it is great for hair health, for general health, for bones, and also for your motivation levels. High testosterone levels = good life, if we had to make a quick resume.

The thing is sugar by itself cannot only hurt your testosterone levels, but by promoting cortisol (stress hormone) through too much caffeine, it ultimately induces a loss in testosterone levels. And, this can be quite consequential on your life, even tho you might not directly feel it at first.

There is also the case of false sugars. False sugars (stevia), or artificial sweeteners (aspartame for example), are great examples of human idiocy. False sugars are unhealthy, some people say no, some people say yes, but I personally say no. Artificially re-creating a sugary taste without any calories, there is something wrong here. Same goes for stevia, even tho it comes from a natural plant, it's quite bad. And also, avoid agave syrup, drinking it is a bad idea.

I would personally stick to 100% natural honey and maple syrup, these are great alternatives to sugar that should not hurt your hormones too much. Honey for example is full of great antioxydants, minerals and vitamins, managing to stop the natural sugar inside of it from playing with your blood sugar levels. In other words, its impact is minor, compared to refined sugar where all vitamins, minerals and antioxidants have been extracted to just keep the glucose.

Also, glucose and fructose syrup is super bad for you, so avoid any supplements with it (and so, a lot of pre-workouts).

Colorants too are often found in pre-workouts, and it's pretty bad for your health. Same goes for conservatives. In other words, avoid any ingredient that is sugary, that is caffeinated, or that is "E-000" something. "E-001" or "E-202" for example could be interpreted as "do not eat", as it's quite bad for your health too.

Ultimately, it all comes down to the question: "What is this supplement giving me, in exchange of its benefits?". Well, it's giving you health problems, destroying your hormones, hurting your sleep which is essential, boosting your stress, depression and risks of dangerous diseases, and it ultimately ruins your health. I don't think it's a good compromise, just to lift 40kg more on the bench-press. Don't let your ego lead your life, or else you'll live a very shitty existence, trust me.

How to replace pre-workouts

A lot of people take pre-workouts even tho it's destroying their health. To me, these people are complete idiots, no other words for this. They're just little kids wanting to show off better performance even tho they need to sacrifice their health to achieve it (if it's their work it can be understandable but for most people it's not!). So, as to help them, and as to help you, the one who wants to find alternatives to pre-workouts because you don't want to take this supplement in order to avoid destroying your health (which is counter-productive because great health and testosterone levels not only boost your life over-all, but also your performance), I've made a list of a few foods or drinks that could help you be full of energy for your workout.

Ok, first off is taking honey a few minutes before a workout. Honey is easily digested by the body as it is in a liquid form and it's not full of fibers, and it'll therefore give you quick sugars and energy for your workout, in a healthy way. Eating fruits one hour or two before working out can also be a good idea, as gives natural sugars but, you have to let the food digest for a while).

Drinking one coffee if it's not in the afternoon hours (as it could affect your sleep) and one hour and thirty minutes after waking up (because before that caffeine is not active), is a good way to improve your energy levels for your workout. Drink it a few minutes before going to workout, as to me the effect seems immediate. Honestly, I don't think it's too necessary. I only take it like once a week or less, and often-times it's not even before a workout.

The best choice would be to eat a full meal, with a good amount of fats, carbs and protein, around an 2 to 4 hours before working out (with around 20-30+ grams of protein, some carbs and some fats). By doing so, you're not neglecting any macronutrients by only eating carbs before a workout for example (here you're eating protein and fats too), and generally a complete meal gives you more energy than a "quick fix carb solution", even tho a "quick fix carb solution" is super helpful too.

Also, you naturally have more energy in the morning, so think about that for your next workout. The best would be to workout at a consistent time everyday as your body loves routine and will naturally boost your energy levels to the specific time you workout at if you stick to a scheduled routine, but for most of us, it's not super realistic.

So, we can try to go to the gym in the morning (me it's not my thing, I prefer late afternoon), as we naturally have more energy in the morning. Late afternoon can also be a good option because even tho we might have used a lot of our energy throughought the day, we also ate a real meal a few hours before (logically), and we can even take a quick pre workout meal a few hours or minutes before in order to boost our energy levels too.

Conclusion

To conclude, avoid pre-workout supplements. This supplement is just shit, for real. Sacrificing health for bigger muscles or better performance just to flex, is as stupid as eating McDonald's or eating a whole pack of donuts "just to get easy energy, bro".
