Listen up, you have to focus on the main chunks of work that gets the ball moving. Let’s use a metaphor. Let’s say you’re trying to move a big ball of stone, from one place to another. What would be the best action that would move this giant ball forward? Well, it would probably be to push, because without this fundamental action, you can’t do anything. So, instead of wasting your time on optimizing your google page so you can gain 0.1 second because you listed in favorites a website, simply work on the thing that pushes the ball forward. Stop looking left and right, stop readjusting the position of the ball, stop trying to find wood to build a catapult, simply push.

In concrete terms, do 20% of the work that gives you 80% of the results: the 80/20 paleo principle! Focus on what actually moves the ball forward. In the case of the ball metaphor, it’s simply pushing, but in your work it might be simply doing the work. For example, if I am an author, the best productive activity I could do, is WRITE, or, prepare the writing (if you plan on writing a book, brainstorming and writing the ideas, organizing the book, etc before writing the book).

If you’re an entrepreneur, the best thing you could do is focusing on the deep-work task, the big chunk of work that moves the ball forward, and trying to get as many chunks of work as you can in a single day. In this way, you get tremendous results compared to your competition, who would be much more focused on advertising their products (even tho they haven’t even finished it) rather than you, who’s actually doing the work that needs to be done. Try to stack as many as these productive chunks of work in a single day.

If you’re a chiropractor and you work 8 hours a day, spend 8 hours a day doing clients. Not enough clients? Spend 6 hours a day doing clients, and 2 hours a day advertising. It’s about time organization, it’s the basic things that haven’t been taught in school, and so adults never question their education! In the chiropractor's case, the best activity he can do to grow his business is to simply work with his clients the majority of the time. If he doesn’t do that, he doesn’t get profits. He could reinvest more time into advertising, but advertising doesn’t make the ball move forward, working with clients does.

For an employee, doing the main, productive work of the moment is what is truly important. Working on a boring presentation isn’t important, it’s not high-quality deep-work. However, doing creative work and working for example on analyzing and putting in a digestible format the latest techniques that increased sales conversion is important. Now, in some domains, making the presentation can be the deep work task that get the ball moving forward, but many office workers are given low quality work.

The average office worker spends 1.5 to 2.5 hours on social media, during work hours. DURING WORK HOURS. Imagine if 10 employees did this. For the company, this represents 15 hours of time lost! In a single day! This represents, per week, 75 hours! Companies lose 75 hours of deep work per week and so of potential profits because their employees are addicted to social media and they probably don’t give two bucks about the company. And that’s assuming, only 10 employees are doing this. Imagine if a hundred did this. 750 hours of business lost per week for 100 employees. Terrifying.

Even worse, see it in terms of profit. With the average American paid $28.16 an hour, this represents for 10 employees, 2112$ of cash lost PER WEEK to pay these employees who waste 75 hours a week on social media at work! (75*28.16 = 2112).

And, that is assuming the workers waste 1.5 hours. In reality, they probably spend 2, 3, maybe even 4 hours for some on social media! That’s THOUSANDS of dollars of profit lost per week. So, this should convince you, especially if you’re an employee who cares about your job, or if you’re an entrepreneur who cares about profits, to work on the main, deep work tasks, the main chunk of work that moves the business forward.

Also, one productivity technique you could use is using Google Calendar. It might be a little tricky to use at first, but once you know how to use it, you can simply organize your whole day on your calendar, so as to not waste time. In this way, you know what to do at every single hour of the day, and you can therefore reinvest your time wisely in what truly matters. For business, it’s important to know how to manage your time effectively. So, Google Calendar is the way to go.
