How to build resilience
Resilience is defined by the Oxford Languages (google’s database for words definition), as « the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. »
In other words, resilience is the ability, or the « capacity », to always face difficulties in a wise and powerful manner, and to always get back up no matter what. In other words, if resilience had to be described a fictional character, it could be Rocky Balboa, in all of its glory.
Life is ultimately a boxing match against the world and yourself. You get knocked down, get back up, get knocked down, get back up, get punched in the face, in the abs, in the stomach, in the shoulder, in the arm, you keep blocking and defending yourself and getting back up and fighting back and punching back and dodging and all of that stuff, and if you simply keep going, you end up surpassing your adversary. That’s a very « American hero » type of story but that’s true. That’s the frame, that we want to follow in life. Always getting back up, no matter what. Pure resilience.
Being resilient means you are very powerful and advanced in the domain of facing difficulties. Some people, and even many people, face difficulties by being emotional, by withdrawing, hiding, closing on themselves, isolating, taking drugs, smoking weed, smoking cigarettes, building addictions, and eating junk food.
What we want to do, is to make resilience, this sort of imaginary value (because ultimately values comes from the human mind if we truly think about it), a reality by using it as our paradigm through which we see life, or at least difficult moments.
A paradigm is a sort of crystal, like a lens, through which you see, and watch, and observe the world. We all have our mental ways of seeing the world, and our goal is to be the most accurate possible. For example, a weak man who doesn’t educate himself, who eats junk food constantly, who works a loser job that he doesn’t like, who doesn’t take care of his hygiene properly or his « life hygiene » (his values, his mental and physical health, etc), will see the world in terms of maximizing pleasure, of having sex and fucking around, of smoking weed and eating junk food. He will see the world through his mental frames of « weak man » media references, such as video game and television, images, ways to react to his environment that is concordant with what he uses to see through the world (if he tries to act like a video game character or some shit for example ).
What I’m trying to say here, is that a paradigm is the way we see through life, and most « normal » and « social » people are people that see through the lenses of their comfort zone (TV and media references, video games, junk food, etc) but they will mostly see life as it is, as real as it can be, even tho they’ll sometimes withdraw from that full vision of the world to close in on themselves because of fear for example.
Our goal, therefore, is to build a paradigm that is the closest to reality as possible. If for example we want to be resilient, we need to see the world as real as it is, with the mindset of « I’ll always keep moving forward ». This mindset is true to reality, as it is truly one of the only things that we can be sure of accomplishing in life. We never know if a bomb is going to fall on us at any single part of the day, but we know for sure, with a 100% certainty, that if there are problems, we’ll keep moving forward. And if you’re not sure, you’re going to have to work on that.
So, how to build resilience?
Resilience is built through experience. It comes from living through dark moments and going through the other way. It’s about having been through difficult times. Not to say that if you want to build resilience, you have to purposefully put yourself into dangerous and/or bad situations that can sadden you or hurt you, but that when you fall on these situations inevitably, you need to keep moving forward and not fall into terrible habits.
Being resilient can also be trained through discipline, it’s when you put your body or mind into a difficult situation. This is a more tangible form of being resilient because it enables you to do it on a daily basis. By becoming more disciplined and going to the gym for example when you don’t want to, you’re building resilience.
Why building resilience?
If you build resilience and discipline, you’re going to be ahead of 95% of people. If you can get through the challenges of life with love and humor, you’re going to be so much more advanced that the majority of people… and you’re going to lead a better life too, whilst having a better self-esteem.
Conclusion
Resilience is an incredible super power that is going to put you ahead of 95% of the population. You also need to accept help in difficult times, but resilience truly is an incredible skill that will boost your power in the world.
