How nutrition can help you feel better mentally
Studies have found that traditional diets led to 25 to 30% less depression compared to western diets. In other words, eating a clean, natural diet composed of traditional foods can lead to bettered health than the western diet, which is often full of processed foods such as crisps, sandwiches, burgers, processed meat (sausages for example, fried chicken), and high in sugar.
This study is super interesting for us, as it means that what you eat on a daily basis CAN affect your mind in one way or another. In other words, what you eat has a direct effect on your mental health.
So, diving into practicality, how can we do this?
Which foods?
So a traditional diet refers to a diet rich in protein and healthy fats, and medium or low in good quality carbs. This means eating fish and seafood, beef and pork and chicken and eggs, for protein and fats, eating butter and olive oil for fats, and eating potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice and fruits and honey for carbs.
This already seems pretty tasty, but it’s also super healthy. This diet is rich in vitamin and minerals, because it’s composed of foods that are naturally rich in those, such as the « super food » that are eggs, or greens and beans and fruits and meat, which are all full of vitamins and minerals from different kinds but which help your body function proprerly.
So, you should. Try to introduce these foods into your diet in order to help with your mental health.
This means, eat more fruits at every meal, and reduce refined sugars such as yogurts or icecream. Eat more unprocessed meat such as beef or pork, and reduce processed meats such as sausages and hotdogs. The goal here is really to avoid everything that is processed massively and/or transformed using harmful chemicals or « foods ». Try to avoid sugar, seed oils, artificial sweeteners, and all of that crap.
This is not the one solution
Journaling is also a great activity for mental health, as a diet isn’ your only savior in this journey. Putting your thoughts and your emotions on paper can help you feel relieved from them.
Meditating is also one of the greatest activities you can do to save your mental health. It’s an easy way to feel more focused and present in the moment and I really recommend it.
Reducing ultra addictive substances is also a great way to boost your mental health, so try avoid junk food, alcohol, and definitely avoid pornography, video games, cigarettes and drugs.
Also, working on yourself and developing better or stronger social connections is VERY important for your mental health. Try to build meaningful connections with people you love and try to speak to more and more people and grow your social circle. Don’t waste time with unproductive friends, colleagues, or comrades. Really spend your time productively with good people that are worth your time and energy.
Conclusion
If your mental health is really bad, seeking help from a psychologist is a MUST. Really, it truly is a MUST. I really suggest doing that as we all need to seek help from time to time, as life can get difficult, and if we don’t have the good people at the right time, it can prove to be very challenging to go through these challenges (even tho it can also prove to be very challenging whilst having the right people at the right moment).
But to conclude on this article, try to focus on eating natural, clean, and healthy foods that will fuel your body correctly and give you tons of energy. Don’t waste time fucking around with unhealthy foods, it’s not worth it. Try to really focus on eating healthy, and you’ll be happy.
I hope this article was of help to you, thank you for reading, and I’ll see you next time, bye.
