Preparing To Eat At A Buffet: How To Do It Properly

Introduction

So, 6 days ago at the date of this writing (I’m writing this article on the 16th of August, 2024), I went to the Grands Buffets De Narbonne.

And, to my American followers, I saw your compatriots there! I heard English people, American people, French people (I’m French by the way), so really a ton of people from around the world gathered to eat here.

The Grands Buffets De Narbonne is an incredible all you can eat buffet, in a sort of.. gastronomic setting. The location looks like a rich palace, absolutely beautiful, and the food is super tasty and really gastronomic. You can find every gastronomic foods of France (foie-gras, lobster, mussels, the best hams in the world, dozens of unlimited desserts, more than a 100 fresh cheeses, the world Guinness record for cheese in this manner), and eat it how you want, when you want, at whatever order you want.

So, being a naturally big eater, I thought that I should try to enlarge my stomach a maximum, because the Grands Buffets are a once and for all opportunity. I mean yes, you can go back to it, but it’s not super fun to go back to it, since once you did the first round… there’s nothing else to really see out there.

So, I used a few techniques to enlarge my stomach and make in sort that I can eat the maximum amount of food possible. Let’s dash in and see what these techniques were.

The first one was to drink tons of water. Professional eaters can drink up to 3.5 liters in 20 minutes. That’s enormous. So, my goal, was to reach at least 5 liters of water throughought the day. Out of these 5 liters, I tried from time to time to drink entire bottles of 1 liters in one take.

Be careful, for people with any sickness, it can be dangerous. Try to consult a medical professional to be sure before trying this idea. Really, it could end with death, it’s quite dangerous if you have underlying health issues.

I drank that much water, and I started eating more in volume too. I started eating salads (because I was still in a calorie deficit) but with HUGE amount of lettuce, like an entire salad bowl of salad. In this way, I could feel full and therefore grow my stomach size.

So, if you mix the water intake, with a lot of food volume, you ultimately grow your stomach. But how to really prepare yourself for a buffet? Well, the first plan is to make a list…

By the way, when I say a list, you should not always go to the letter with it, you can invent and do whatever you want afterward if you feel good. For example, at the Grands Buffets de Narbonne, I calculated that my first plate would be the foie-gras, then the hams, then my first meal would be a lobster, then meat in some sauce (such as a blanquette de veau), and then I would go to eat one plate of cheese, and then two plates at least of dessert.

And, I almost followed the plan to the letter. However, I ate a lot of bread and also another 2 plates that wasn’t « pre-prepared » in my mind’s list, originally.

Just go with the flow and see what you can eat. Don’t overthink it, it’s only a buffet, but I feel like it’s a fun experience to train for a buffet so you can enjoy the maximum amount of food there.

The day before, eat high in quantity at lunch and normal at night. The morning, don’t eat anything, until you reach lunch or dinner.

Also, when you’ll be at the buffet, you’ve got a few things to avoid. First off, I made the « mistake » (even tho it wasn’t a mistake but if you have the purpose of eating the maximum of gastronomic and rare foods, it is one) of eating the « low quality » foods that are put before or in the waiting line to getting to the Fois Gras for example. Most « low quality foods » often are placed in obvious places for the clients, so they don’t pick the rare and expensive foods, but mostly the low-quality ones.

So, be careful about stuffed tomatoes, toasts and all that stupid stuff. Don’t waste your energy on this, even if you were starving like me. Simply eat the important stuff, and once you did this, if you want to taste the unimportant stuff, do it, at least if your goal is to really rentabilize your buffet at a maximum.

Also, don’t stuff your face with bread. For eating fois-gras or cheese for example, bread is indispensable for the ultimate taste, at least in my opinion and in the opinion of the vast majority of the people in the country of France. Fois gras without bread sucks, nobody eats it like this. So, of course you’ll probably have to eat bread, at least in my case I had to. If there is cheese, you’ve got to eat bread too. But don’t fill yourself with low quality carbs, really focus on the high quality foods you can find.

Same for water. Drink a few glasses but don’t drink a lot, else you’ll be rapidly filled. It’s all about balance between low quality beverages and foods, and high quality beverages and foods. Try to really focus on the high quality, then the low quality next.
