Hard times create strong men
This saying has been going on for a long time now on social media, and there is definitely a truth that is bespeaks.
This saying applies also to mental health. We all go through hard times, some have more intense hard times than others, but we all have "hard times" at our own individual level. And even though this saying has been created with the intention of speaking about men, it's also true of women. Both unique genders have to face problems and deal with complicated situations, including mental health problems and even sometimes depression and hopelessness.
There is a global downfall of mental health. Luckily, we're starting to recognize it more and more in the world, and mental health has become a real concept, compared to the past century where mental health was not real in the words of most people.
People have pretty bad lives in general, they're lazy and unproductive and they're wasting their potential away to easy pleasures, so of course they live bad lives and of course they have mental health problems.
And even if you have a good life and you're being on self-improvement, you can still struggle with mental health for a multitude of reasons. This is why therapy can help and generally I recommend, if you've got mental health problems despite giving yourself the means, to go to therapy.
But before taking in consideration therapy, let's simply try to install a few good habits. One thing I've realized is One thing I've realized is that good habits really change your life in significant ways. And this is your generic guru advice "make good habits an habit", but really, good habits are a life changer.
I've dealt with good habits a lot, and I can assure you that continuing good habits throughought the weeks, months, and years, will not only help you achieve your goal, but it will make you in the end absolutely fan of yourself. It's a true thing.
So, what are the good habits that are so "crucial"? Well, the first one is meditation.
Meditation is one of the greatest habits for clearing your mind, science says. In reality, meditation takes a lot of seriousness and time in order to see tangible results. It's not after one meditation session that you'll see the difference, but after a few you might start feeling more relax, and then more focused, and then wiser etc.
So meditation is great if you're consistent with it. And to do so, try to find a time of the day that you have everyday, where you can meditate. For example, I bet that you eat dinner everyday, and lunch too. And, I bet you take a work break. And, I bet you wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night. In this way, by "relying" meditation to one of these activities, you can make in sort it becomes consistent.
If everytime before bed you meditate, you'll make it an easy habit to pursue as it is in your ritual. And, often-times, it'll help you fall asleep faster. Double bonus.
The second habit for mental health is social connection. Social connection is crucial for us humans because it's one of our deepest desire and need. If you look at 99% of the animal kingdom, species are not independent. Gorilla's lives with others, lions in tribes, hyenas in groups, and ants in society.
Therefore, all animals and insects in the animal kingdom have some sort of social connection, and humans aren't an exception. Therefore, if you have an ounce of intelligence, you would realize that you, just like any other human being on this planet, NEED OTHERS.
Even in hard moments, do not isolate yourself. What is the goal of doing so? If you feel lonely, go speak to strangers in the street. When was the last time you had a conversation with the bus driver? Did you ever had a conversation with the bus driver? With your boss? Your colleagues at work? An old man in the pharmacy or a lady in the supermarket?
Go out and SPEAK. Do not be an annoying freak. Be a gentleman or gentlewoman and go and speak to others when they are open about it.
Social connection is key, and making a very dense "network" of people is not only very respectable, but also very useful and fulfilling.
The third habit I want you to build is an healthy lifestyle. Sleeping 7-9 hours per night everyday and having good quality sleep, staying hydrated, working out a few times per week or almost everyday, eating good and natural foods, reading good books and being a nice and strong person.
All of these characteristics of a "great individual" should be yours. It should ALREADY be yours, but society hasn't build you that way, and you haven't built yourself that way. Build yourself as this person. It's a matter of habits and long-term commitment to self-love. Self-improvement is self-love. Indulging in unhealthy snacks because "you need rest from your hard life and you love your body no matter how distorted it is" isn't self-love.
So, make it an habit to wake up early and sleep well. Make it an habit to go to sleep early and sleep well. Make it an habit to do your work properly and be nice to others. Make it a habit to workout regularly and to eat good foods. Make it a habit to give up bad habits, such as junk food, video games, and television.
Now sure, these habits alone can definitely help you, but for some people the mental health issue is deeper than that (a mental health condition, a traumatic event to deal with, or a particularly difficult period, etc) but for most of us these habits will already help us improve our mental health, even in dark places. In other words, even tho sometimes therapy might seem necessary, it's still important to improve yourself as it is where it matters most.
Therapy plays a crucial role in fixing one's mental health when habits and self-improvement can't help. I really suggest not wasting your time and going directly to therapists. No, they're not all here to get money out of your bank account, some of them are actually great. For some people, therapy isn't even an option. It's an obligation.
Ultimately, remember that storms happens.. Life is made of storms, just like the weather from time to time. Sometimes, it's raining, some other days, the sunshine breaks through the sky, it's a natural law. So, when storm happens, just get through them, like you get through storms and bad weather.
You need to learn from nature. See how nature reacts, it has dark moments and light moments, it has night and day, storm and sunshine, so just follow nature. We're a part of nature, it's not because humans have a consciousness that we don't apply to its natural law, or else we wouldn't be pushed toward the center of the earth with this universal law called "gravity", and we wouldn't die.
So, learn from nature. If the birds can make it through storms, you can too. It's just different storms. But even if you wanted to look at things scientifically, your mental health problems can be surpassed by your sheer will. Really, if you don't die, you keep living, and if you keep living, you keep having the capacity to move forward. Just keep moving forward. That is what matters. And never give up. Be so fucking resilient that your mind cries its ass off when it sees how ready you are to beat his ass.
Stoicism
Stoicism is a mindset created by ancient greeks and romans. It's a way of seeing life with multiple "stoic laws" which can help you get through problems and challenges in life.
One of the main stoic laws, and maybe even one of the most famous one, is to control what you can control and to not waste time and energy on things you cannot control.
We've all got a certain amount of power over what we can control, since you know, we can control it. If your mental health is bad because for example of a traumatic event that happened to you in the past, you don't need to think you're doomed forever. Instead, realize that EVERYTHING is in your control. You have ALL the opportunities and ALL the choices.
If you see it that way, it gives you the power you need to get the chore of mental health done. You can 1) go to therapy, 2) learn more about how to deal with traumatic events, 3) talk about it to others, 4) educate yourself and meditate regularly to put you back into the present, 5) do self-affirmations, 6) sleep well so as to regulate your mood and eat an healthy diet for the same goal, 7) exercise often in order to feel better in your body and mind, 8) have social connections to be around good people, etc.
You have a lot of variables in your control and a few that are not in your control (you cannot go back in the past, for example), so make use of this power wisely. See yourself above the problem, you're tough, aren't you? So get through that with your chest up and your head high.
So one thing you can do is to dive into the stoics teaching, as they have a lot of "rules and laws" or "ways of seeing the world and navigating challenges" that could truly help you in your mental health journey.
Conclusion

Still, if you're struggling, a mental health professional might be needed and despite the price it represents, I still suggest going to it as it's super useful. Really, therapy is great and it's going to help you heal your brain on this journey.
