A great morning routine you can follow
What is a morning routine? A morning routine is a routine, which means a sequence of habits you perform in the morning hours, so a few hours or right away after waking up. A morning routine should last 1 hour and thirty minutes maximum, including dressing up, hygiene, etc.
Since I'm not there to waste your time, here I'll get straight to the point.
If you have 1h30
Here is a sustainable morning routine you can follow if you have an hour and thirty minutes in the morning to prepare yourself before going on with your day. The first task we're going to tackle is cold showers.
Cold showers are great for the body and mind. I suggest getting into cold water and getting into the shower not progressively but suddenly. The goal is to really "shock" yourself. Try to expose after a bit of time your most sensitive parts to the cold, such as the back of the neck for example, for around 10-20 seconds. We want to really wake up your dopamine system and really kickstart your day.
Do cold showers right away, after waking up. You have a 10-minute interval to wake up, get into the shower, take a shower, etc. You can simply do some cold water exposure or you can take a full-on shower, but for hygienic reasons, a full shower with soap and stuff might be better. The best would be ice baths to get all of the benefits of cold exposure.
Then, after the cold shower, dress up and watch the sunlight for 10 minutes on sunny days. On cloudy days, you can skip this or watch the clouds for longer (around 20 minutes). Don't look directly at the sun but look in the direction of the sun to get some sunlight into your eyes. In the case of a cloudy day, look directly at the clouds as it's not dangerous for your eye health.
Afterward, practice meditation. The goal is to kickstart your presence and mindfulness right away in the day. Meditate for 10 minutes. These first 30 minutes are quite self-improvement-oriented and health-oriented, it's a way to get your values in place and get small wins right away so you can start your day in a growth-mindset sort of mood. If it proves to be exhausting to do all of this in the morning or right away, you can push it back to later and start your morning with sunlight exposure for example instead of a cold shower.
Then, you can spend 20 more minutes doing your hair, preparing yourself, and maybe brushing your teeth if you haven't done it before. You can prepare your bag if you're a worker that requires one or if you are a student, etc.
Once you do this, you can go on and read for 20 minutes. Religious books, self-help books, relationship books, spirituality books, whatever. Just try to avoid fiction, we're reading books to improve ourselves, not for entertainment.
Then, for the next 20 minutes of your morning routine (1H10-1H30), you can eat breakfast if your goal is to maximize muscle protein synthesis (even tho it's better to skip breakfast), so getting some sort of eggs with healthy fats or whatever is a great example. You can also get some carbs, it's a choice even tho I don't recommend eating carbs right away before serious mental work.
If you're skipping breakfast for productivity sake or health sake (intermittent fasting is great for health), simply go and take a walk in nature or in your town or you can prepare or do whatever you need to do. You can also do this if you eat breakfast but it's just generally breakfast takes time.
So, the morning routine would look like as follows:
10 minutes: cold shower + hygiene.
10 minutes: sunlight exposure.
10 minutes: meditation.
20 minutes: doing your hair, preparing yourself, etc.
20 minutes: reading.
20 minutes: do whatever you need to do.
If you have 1h
As usual, the first 10 minutes of the day start with a cold shower or ice bath immersion. Cold exposure is key.
Then, the next 10 minutes are dedicated to sunlight exposure.
The other 20 minutes are dedicated to dressing up and doing your hair, putting your make-up on if you're a girl wearing make-up, basic hygiene, etc. If it takes more time simply sacrifice the last 10 minutes or push the meditation at night.
10 minutes are then spent on meditating.
10 minutes are spent on eating or doing whatever you want or need to do.
If we put everything together, it looks like this:
10 minutes: cold exposure.
10 minutes: sunlight exposure.
20 minutes: dressing up, hygiene, etc.
10 minutes: meditation.
10 minutes: do whatever you need to do and eat if you need a meal. If you don't really need a meal, do intermittent fasting.
The best activity to do if you have the time
So, this activity that I'm about to tell you about is mainly for people who can work at home or who are independent (entrepreneurs, etc), or who have a lot of time before work. The thing with this activity is that you can still do it on weekends on your personal projects, so if you have a side business despite working a nine to five for example, you can still do this on week-ends and therefore this section of the article is still of the utmost importance in your case.
Before doing your usual morning routine, simply work for an hour and thirty. An hour and thirty of unperturbed deep work. Focus on your work, take the biggest task of the day, and simply do it. Just do the work.
Find out what your "eat the frog task" is. It's the hardest task of your day or the biggest one. For example, let's say you have a side business and the biggest or hardest activity (20% of the activity) that gives you outsized results (80% of results) is writing, then write for an hour and thirty right after waking up or after a cold water immersion. If it is planning an article, plan your article. If it's recording a YouTube video, do it! If it's editing a YouTube video, do it!
You might be tempted to wake up an hour and thirty before your usual wake-up time during the week if you have other priorities in the morning in order to do this eat the frog work but overall I don't think it's worth it anyway because sacrificing your sleep could affect your overall productivity performance.
It's like killing the goose to steal the meat instead of waiting for the goose to produce hundreds of eggs a year which would nourish you more since you have more of it, for a longer period of time.
So, if you have the time, work on your "eat the frog task" first thing in the morning. I personally do this on the weekends because during the week I have fixed schedules to attend so I can't do so.
You can also try to get some exercise in if your priority isn't your work. If you're an entrepreneur, prioritize your work first if you want your business to grow or your audience to grow or whatever, but if you're commuting to work and you can't work on your business anyway without sacrificing your sleep, try to get some exercise in. If you can't get much exercise, try to simply do it after work.
Also, not eating for productivity can prove to be an important tool. Not eating in the morning when you have a serious "eat the frog task" can really boost your cognitive function. Your brain feels much sharper and almost smarter. It's as if you lost your brain fog. Oftentimes, digestion causes brain fog, and if you eat carbs it's even worse. I'm not demonizing carbs, carbs are super useful when used correctly, but do not eat too much of it in the morning if you have serious work to get done. It really makes a difference.
Finally, before closing in on this article, remember that the best morning routine is the one that fits you and that gives you results in your growth and happiness. It might sound a little bit guru-esque but sustainability will always win over intensity, at least for the period of a lifetime, since intensity, if pushed too far and if it's not regulated correctly, can lead to a sort of burning of energy, just like wood would burn itself to fuel the fire, you will burn your internal energy and fuel too fast.
Also, remember that these are only hypothetical great morning routines. The ones I gave you, I don't respect them myself! Yes, I gave you something and I don't do it, and you might think I'm ridiculous for this, but listen up: the hypothetical perfect timings and days don't always work like this. Sometimes, some mornings, you'll be slower than others or less energetic which will make you waste more time, some mornings you will notice your dog ate the couch or you will see that it rains and so you need to get new clothes, etc.
What I mean here, is that the hypothetical morning routine can be a baseline to start with but it's not a "bad day" because you didn't have your perfect morning routine. How weak-minded is this? Does a morning routine define you and your whole identity and your whole day? Do you feel like poop during your day because you didn't meditate this morning? You should rather see your morning routine as the basic activities you do in the morning and not simply as a sort of extra-scheduled ultra-serious block of sequential actions. Some people like it but it's not my style.
I suggest creating your own routine but these templates of morning routines are great and you can even use them to create your own. What I'm suggesting here is only a hypothetical way of waking up and getting prepared for the day, not a fool-proof always working morning routine.
Sometimes in my day-to-day life, I barely have the time in the morning to prepare my food for the day, get a shower, dress up, and eat something quickly before leaving the house, so realistically finding time to meditate and sunlight exposure and all that stuff is complicated considering I favor my sleep more than these activities. It also depends heavily on your responsibilities.
Personally, I decided to go on a more "freestyle" way of living in the morning. I know the things I should do, I do cold exposure first thing first and I do this and that but I'm not following a specific program to the letter. Also, I didn't mention it but of course, if you have some supplements and it's the right timing, take your supplements and do all these little stuff of everyday life. That's why a hypothetical great morning routine is difficult to follow because there might be interruptions that naturally occur. Just don't use this as an excuse to be lazy, stupid people.
Conclusion
I hope this article was of help to you. Just remember that generally, if you find the activities that give you great results and you can do them in the morning, then do them in the morning. If you can meditate and read every morning, do so!
But if you struggle to find the time it's alright, try to still free time for it but if you really can't, then it's alright. I personally read on the public transport when I take it. That's a way of maximizing your time spent in the morning.
As always, I'll see you next time. Bye.
