Is polyester bad for you?

Polyester is a plastic textile fiber that has been dominating the clothing industry for the past few years.

Even tho a lot of products still hold firm on cotton or other natural textile fibers, a lot of companies, to make the maximum of profit and margin or to simply have a particular texture in their clothes, add polyester to the mix or go with polyester all together.

For example, if you go on Shein, some clothes are super cheap. And why is that? Well, because the clothes are low-quality clothes mainly composed of polyester. Most joggings, pullovers, and even sockets, are composed of polyester nowadays.

And the problem with polyester, is that it has something to do with plastics. And, as you probably know, plastic is pretty problematic in this world. I'm not going to speak about the environment impact of plastic in the terms of waste in oceans and all that stuff, I'm mainly speaking about its effect on our bodies.

The problem with plastic

Plastic is super useful, but also extremely destructive. For the past few decades, the level of testosterone (a super important hormone that regulates mood, energy levels, muscular mass and hair growth) has been dropping significantly in both man and woman. We went from the average man having around 1000 ng/dl of testosterone, to the average man, in 2024, having around 300-200 ng/dl of testosterone.

That's a huge decrease, and this huge decrease might explain why nowadays there are a lot of immature, childish, irresponsible men, and wimpy, unintelligent women. More importantly, it directly connects with the obesity crises and the fact that people are more and more depressed.

Look, testosterone is super important for our health. This drop has reasons, right? Well, aging generally reduces the testosterone in your body. But here, it's for every age, so what is happening? Well, the "average man" eats ultra-processed foods, doesn't exercise often, has bad sleep, doesn't hydrate himself properly, destroys his brain and dopamine receptors with instant gratification, hurts his testosterone by promoting estrogenic activities such as smoking week, drinking alcohol, eating sugar or smoking cigarettes, etc etc.

But I think the most destructive thing of all, is the fact that all of these "synthetic" materials and objects we use (household products containing Parabens, polyester leading to microplastic waste in water systems, etc) end up in the water system, in the air, in the animals we eat and in our own flesh, which hurts our hormones.

You see, we have this habit, as humans, to destroy everything we get our hands on. And, since we've conquered a lot of things now, I think we're trying to destroy ourselves. Really, ESTROGENICS (synthetic or natural materials, food, chemicals that mimic the hormone estrogen in your body and promotes a loss of testosterone and health complications down the line) are EVERYWHERE. In the air you breathe, everyday. In the water you drink. In the food you EAT.

So, that's a huge problem, because we've got lots of estrogenics, a lot of them coming from plastic, and it's hard to stop the phenomenon. And... polyester is a plastic. And... polyester leashes microplastic into your water system when you put it in the washing machine. And... this ends up in your water system, and in the world.

In fact, polyester has been shown to be responsible for 50% of microplastic pollution. That's a lot.

Also, for your information, polyester underwear has been linked to azoospermia. This is a very serious condition for the future of human fertility. So think twice before buying polyester.

So what are our solutions?

We don't have a thousand solutions, because the problem is that polyester is all around us, as we are all in contact with people wearing polyester, living in cities where people use polyester, or in towns where people use polyesters, etc.

So our solution... is to control what we can control. And this means, not controlling what we cannot control, because it is unproductive and a waste of time.

So, in other words, we want to reduce and even sell or throw away polyester clothes. Try to reduce at a maximum, and even throw away unnecessary polyester clothes. They're not worth it. Buy cotton as much as possible. Cotton is good for your health and it's natural, it's also a very comfortable fabric (much more than polyester).

Also, if you can, put a water filter that filters microplastics and harmful chemicals on your tap, as to protect your tap water from being contaminated (municipalities don't properly filter everything).

Conclusion

To conclude, remember to be careful with polyester and others synthetic materials. For your health and for the health of others, as well as the health of other species and planet earth.

It's alright to buy one polyester clothing in your wardrobe. Don't get over-focused on it. But for underwear, and even bed sheets, be VERY careful, as its impact could really be major on your health. Microplastics and azoospermia are not a good mix. Avoid polyester.
