Introduction
Most people stop educating themselves after school. Their whole lives, they have been forced to learn things that they didn’t particularly think was interesting, or that they found interesting but didn’t really want to dive into.
Think about your grand, grand, grandparents. In the 18th century. These guys didn’t have as much access to information as you had. Imagine how eager some of the people in this century would’ve been if they could simply access a ton of information on health, self-improvement, bettering themselves, becoming a better partner, worker, becoming more productive, etc. You have the chance of accessing high quality information (just as much as low quality information) on a daily basis, 24/7, almost everywhere in the world or in your local community, in an instant.
You NEED to keep learning. It’s not a counsel, it’s not counseling that I’m doing right now. I’m giving you an order that will help your whole life target itself toward a better and more productive path.
Think about it, us humans are learning creatures. Our brain registers what happens around us and interprets it with the rules we set in our mind.
For example, if we’ve been taught that eating with the mouth open was impolite when being a kid, our brain registered this rule through the authority and the own conditioning of the parents and of what society deems to be a « socially acceptable behavior ». Now, when we get the cue of seeing someone with the mouth open (through our senses and mostly our sight and earring), we tend to think of this person as « impolite », as we’ve been conditioned to interpret. We can condition ourselves to believe in new values and rules. Some people have never been taught to close their mouth whilst eating, but throughought the years, they get conditioned either through their own rules (I don’t want to live like an impolite person anymore) and even in a sort of underlying way by societal norms (I can’t go in this gastronomic restaurant because I’ll be impolite and this could cause me troubles) to close their mouth whilst eating.
Therefore, they learn. X cue is bad, me not follow up on this. Y cue is good, me follow up on this. Mocking a person with an handicap? Cue = handicap, brain learned in the past that it’s not good to mock people with handicap, I’ll make proof of goodwill. I’ll not be impolite or hurtful toward this person.
And sure, these rules build up our entire lives, sometimes even without having to learn directly about them. It happens unconsciously too. Through communication (discussion with people or groups of people), the media, television, radio, and politics, we get influenced to societal norms. This is also what school is here for: putting each kid to the right path, proning the values of liberty and equality.
However, if you listen to media and condition your brain to it, you’re fucked. You’ll only learn useless and garbage information, often times not even well-researched, from diverse sources that are not always reliable or truly helpful. If I had to only listen to what the media says all day long, I would get depressed from the amount of disasters they bring on the spotlight (murders, natural catastrophes, religious attacks, etc).
What I’m trying to say here, is that if improving ourselves and the world is the best thing we can do, we need to learn how to do it, and to learn the HOW, is to educate yourself constantly on new subjects. If your goal is to lose weight in 6 months, read articles on losing weight quickly. Learn tips, the best food for that matter, the lowest calorie foods on the market, the most « bang for your buck (or bang for your calories) » foods, that give you the maximum amount of micro and macronutrients for the least amount of calories.
If you begin seeing learning as a necessary goal of your life, you’re going to be always improving. Now sure, if you’re learning about the garbage social media feeds you or about the sadness of the world or if you keep learning but you never apply what this education taught you, it’s going to be pretty useless or even degrading to yourself and your personality. But, just like a flower cannot grow without water, just like an animal can’t evolve intellectually without being taught a set of effective and simple rules (a dog is taught to sit down, behave properly, and wait his turn for his food), humans need education, in order to grow. And, they can grow into a bad way, or in a good way. Now, this is the importance of differentiating many media’s.
Think about TV. It’s highly probable that television is a bad learning outlet, however, books are a great one. Books are often filled with useful information that is condensed from many years of work, instead of the junk « educational quality » of television. Not only that, books are productive and are very « natural », good for your brain and it stimulates you intellectually. This is of course not comparable to TV, as TV destroys your brain, and is unproductive.
So, the quality of the media outlet matters. To introduce a learning habit in your day, make it a rule to learn one new thing everyday, when you’re on the bus, at home before bed by reading a book, or when you’re at work during a pause.
The goal really is to find little times of your day to introduce learning. It might not seem funny, but if you only force yourself, you’re going to feel better and you’re going to boost your intellectuality. It’s a true thing. And, your culture in general will become even better.
So, use books, podcasts, audiobooks, articles, to learn about self-improvement, becoming better, spirituality, health, fitness, family, social interactions, purpose, religion, the importance of discipline, self-esteem, mental health, weight-lifting, football, etc. In this way, you can become incredibly better at the ultimate game of life.
As for newspapers, you can try to avoid them as they still have all the « junk » « sad » information of TV, that is going to darken your world. Try to avoid learning about too many deaths and catastrophes, it could prove to hurt your mental health.
I want you finally to realize the progress you could make if you started learning now, when you’ll be 80 years old. I’ll let you meditate on that thought.
Conclusion
Try to become better everyday and learn constantly useful information and knowledge. In this way, you can keep growing and become a better human being, functioning more properly in this world. You’ll become a wiser and better individual, and we need more of these people in the world, truly.
Don’t be harsh on yourself. 1% is plenty. Start small and then slowly upgrade the amount of learning through time, or find a « sweet spot » that you can maintain for months, or even years, or even a lifetime.
I hope this article was of help to you. As always, thank you for reading, and I’ll see you next time. Bye.
