The Key Is Productivity

Do you know what self-improvement truly is? Self-improvement is improving yourself everyday little by little so you end up becoming the person you truly want to be. You can therefore better your physical and mental skills every single day.

I can make the choice today to better my intelligence by training my brain to solve problems. I can train my ability to fight physically by going to the boxing club. I can train my brain to become more disciplined by going to the gym when I don't feel like it.

In other words, self-improvement is about becoming better, and you need to train, both physically and mentally, in order to become better, because to increase your skills in an area, you need to train. The best plumber is the one who trained on a hundred different cases, the best baker is the one who baked thousands of cakes during his life, the best police man is the one who has an extensive career record.

So, if you don't get better grades (assuming you're not at the maximum grade already) and you really wish to better yourself in this endeavor of life, we need to find the activities you could perform that would give you better grades.

Of course, you could re-read your lesson more often. You could read it as much as thrice everyday, once every morning, once every lunch, and once after dinner every single day.

You could maybe better your "fitness life", by going to the gym more often or doing more cardiovascular exercises, so you could become more focused and increase your grades.

But the key thing you could do, the underlying factor, is to 1) learn more or better in 2) the same amount of time. In other words, you need to produce more work, or make this work more valuable, in the same amount of time. And THIS, is called productivity. Productivity is not about looking cool or having a time schedule. These are outcomes or tools that stems from productivity.

What productivity truly is, is a residue. In fact, the first definition of productivity was the "Total Factor Productivity". In other words, productivity is the "unexplained factor" which explains why a company for example produces more or produces better. We only have two factors: the Capital factor (what you possess: the machines you have, the equipment you have, the factory, etc) and the Labour factor (your team, your workers). If the capital and the labour are working at the same rate but you have economic growth, this means there is a third factor, an unexplained factor, that helps the company grow, because the labour and the capital factors are the same and if nothing have changed with them then something have changed somewhere else... and this factor, is PRODUCTIVITY.

In other words, productivity is the third factor to any production, it's doing things better, in the same amount of time, or even ideally in less time. If one day I take 2 hours to write an article, and I write an article of similar quality in 1 hour the next day, I gained a ton in productivity.

Now, let's look at our grades and at our homework. We want to increase our productivity in order to do our homework better, and to get better grades.

First off, in order to be more productive, we need to make our environment compatible with such productivity. In other words, we need to be in a closed room, aside from the rest of the world, where you're alone preferably, just working calmly.

Secondly, you need to be focused. You need to have a real desire at this time to do your homework and to get done with them, as if you go with a "it sucks" mentality, you're not going to do high quality work or retain your lesson correctly. You really need to set aside 30 minutes, and use the mindset of "I'm productive" so you feel productive and then you feel cool and it actually feels fun.

If when I do my homework I tell myself I'm productive and I'm going to have great grades and returns on my investment, then I'm going to love doing my homework. If I tell myself I'm going to have bad grades and I have to force myself to "waste my time" on "stupid homework", then I'm going to approach it with a defeated mindset, and my results will be as defeated as my mind.

So really, focus on your environment and your mindset. Once this is done, I also want you to listen in class. It's cool to make social connections and laugh with others and try to speak to a cute girl in your class, but really, the professor isn't waiting for you and he doesn't want your bullshit. If you can't "work" in the most literal sense of exchanging your time for money like your parents does as you're probably a minor, then try to "work" at school.

If you're forced to stay here for 8 hours every single day of the week except on week-ends, then you'll be better of "working" for real, as it'll teach you many values which can be of help in your professional life in the future and in your personal life on a daily basis, such as resilience, discipline, and it'll train your focus too. Even if the subject is not interesting, always try to become better, even at school.

If you constantly have the mindset of improving, if you feel nice about being productive, if you listen to the lessons in class (70% of the work is done in class) and if you re-read your lessons and take the time to really do your homework properly in a room where nobody disturb you and when you're fully focused and almost eager to do them, you'll retain your lessons much better, you'll get better grades, and you'll complete your homework faster.

If you've got things that you don't understand, don't skip them or push it for later and instead look up how to do them. And also, don't try to give you a time constraint for homework (I have to absolutely finish them in 30 minutes because then I've got to do this and that), just tell yourself a specific time (for example 1 hour), and if you over-ride this time because you haven't finished your homework and you really want to get done with them or understand a concept for example in the lesson, then take more time in order to learn.

If you want to prioritize entrepreneurship like me for example, you'll be less enthusiastic with doing homework, because you'll see it as a "second charge" of work on top of your "primary charge" which is your business. But if you really, really want to get into university and have a certain job that requires a great license and good grades, then spend all of your energy on working on your homework and your grades. Not only will you get better at it, not only will you cultivate yourself, not only will you learn values, not only will you improve your grades, but you'll also do them faster and better.

That's the value of productivity.

Conclusion

I hope this article was of help to you. Remember that becoming more productive will be of massive help in your scholar journey, and you should really look into it and research the subject more. As always, keep improving.
